Still In Custody

See what happens when WikiLeaks releases another document dump, this time from secret U.S. State Department cables. Another look at the state of the world and technology.                                                  Another great Mark Fiore political animation.
Yesterday, with money donated from his supporters from all over the world, Julian Assange was granted bail in Great Britain, Unfortunately, under pressure from the US State Department, the Swedes are appealing the release pending their expedited extradition request. Of course, this is being expedited so he can be handed by the Swedes over to the Americans for what inevitably, if it actually occurs, a very politically damaging show trial which will weaken Americas stature and make Assange into a real martyr.
But on another level, when have you ever seen a sex crime case treated as an international incident?
Especially when the allegations are as non specific and seem to revolve latent regret over consensual sex?
When have the rights of women ever been so rigorously upheld and enforced?
This is an insult to all of the tens of thousands of women who have been kidnapped and raped, raped at gunpoint, raped with sharp objects, gang raped, beaten and raped, raped as children, raped by acquaintances, who are still awaiting the least whisper of justice.
The highly unusual reaction of Sweden and Britain to this is a slap in the face. It seems to send a message to the women of Sweden and Britain that if you ever want anyone to take a sex crime committed against you seriously, you had better be sure the man you accuse of rape has also happened to  embarrassed the most powerful government on earth.
