The Dutch Witkar, a system beyond bike sharing involving an advanced computer controlled technology for it's time, started in 1969. It, of course, had developmental problems that were mainly based on destination based traffic flow, but it is now being revived. Technology has gone way beyond the original concept. It is over 30 years into the future....

Forever Was Just A Few Years Ago

This is a picture of a rosette design carved in the stone of my barn by a friend from New York, just 6 years ago. He's a professional stone carver among many other things and he executed in only a few hours. The stone is the rather friable red sandstone everything around here is built from. I looked at it yesterday and saw the moss growing on it and realized that it looked as if it had always been here forever.....

The Equation Is: Greed+Guns=Who Needs Gun Control?

Here's an interesting proposal and maybe you can figure out how you can get in on the bottom floor, because the equation is Guns and Greed divided by The Insurance Industry with a nice lobbyist payoff to the Republicans which might just = bypassing gun control legislation and making the NRA redundant.

 It makes a lot more sense to sidestep the entire gun control controversy and instead pass state laws that require anyone who owns a gun to carry insurance. If they have risk factors (like teenagers in the house), their rates go up. If one of their kids sneaks a gun out of the house and gets caught, or uses it to commit a crime, the insurance gets canceled for some meaningful period of time -- say, 10 years.

And if someone steals your gun and you don't report it in a 24-hour window of you finding out, your insurance is suspended.

If you have a rifle and it's only used for hunting, low rates. If you have a Glock and you carry it in an open-carry town or state, your rates will be very high -- because odds are so much higher that innocent bystanders may get caught in a shootout.

Homeowners could be required to carry gun insurance as long as they're still paying on a mortgage, because a gun accident or misuse could result in a large legal judgment against the house.

Oh yeah, and you have to buy coverage for each gun you own.

I think it has real possibilities. What do you think? Or are guns somehow less potentially dangerous than, say, cars?

SPY

I have posted a few pieces by the French artist, Ben l'Oncle Soul. Yesterday, this was playing in the background in a store I was in. I realized I had heard it before performed live and I loved it then...This is Spy by the rapper Beat Assailant, from his record, Space Time Continuum, but it's really Ben's show here. I was going to post the video of the live performance, but when I saw the extremely cool graphic video, I just had to post it. This is true hip smarm, the sound track of James Bond movie way too cool to be ever really made!

I have done many posts regarding the rights of artists to reference other art and popular culture in the creation of new art. Picasso had an entire period that involved using the work of Velesquez as a jumping off point...Dali gladly acknowledged Millet as a primary inspiration in his works inspired by Millets, Angelus.
Today, though, the biggest artists have seem to have become the biggest pirates. I have to admit that though I never liked the art of Jeff Koons, I admired the way he promoted himself. That to me was his art. The ultimate self promotion. Now Koons has become just a impersonal brand name...a vehicle to make corporate bucks...

Lawyers representing Jeff Koons, the pop artist known for remixing common objects and other peoples' art, have demanded that San Francisco's Park Life stop selling book-ends that look like balloon dogs. Koons's lawyers argue that since Koons once produced a set of iconic statues of balloon dogs, all representations of balloon dogs are henceforth Koons's exclusive purview, and anyone who makes or sells a balloon dog infringes on Koons's copyright.


I always say that every pirate wishes he was an admiral, but it's not often that you get as clear an example as this: having built a career on the flexibilities in copyright law that allow artists to make transformative use of the works around them, Koons now wishes to terminate those flexibilities and award himself exclusive rights over all the works he's made, and the works that inspired them.


This is a textbook case of why artists who argue against copyright flexibilities should be viewed with great skepticism; like the established fashion designers who say that it's unfair that clothing patterns don't qualify for copyright (and never mind the fact that all these designers benefited enormously from the right to copy popular designs when they were starting out), Koons believes that copyright flexibilities should only apply to him, and not to the artists who come after him.

Lawyers of American artist Jeff Koons issued a cease-and-desist letter to Park Life, a small San Francisco store and gallery, asking them to stop selling and advertising their balloon dog bookends.

Can Koons own something that existed before him? Also considering that the artist has based his whole career on appropriating pop culture and has been repeatedly sued for inappropriately using others' copyrighted images.

A Historically Proven Equation: Hate+Media=BIG $

I thought that this was a very interesting piece in a historical context. After all the influence of "hate media" is not a new thing. We now have almost 80 years of media influenced sensationalist opinion that can be easily demonstrated in evidence of its influence on society and as Mike Papantonio points out on The Ed Schultz Show, hateful and violent rhetoric from the right existed back in the days of JFK, and many believe that this is what led to his assassination.

The Return Of Per Duck

I'm posting this because I wanted to present a little more of the music of Terje Rypdal, the Norwegian Jazz guitarist. This is actually a piece called, The Return Of Per Ulv from his early 80's recording, If Mountains Could Sing.  His composition, atmosphere, style and touch...totally unique. I was never a technically accomplished guitarist, but he really influences the way I play and what I thought I could aspire to. The art work is really grand...

Goran Bregrovic, the Serbian composer, shows us why tea baggin' Americans are just wimps when it comes to lovin' their semi automatic weapons...Bregovic, born in Belgrade in 1950, had a rock band, Biejelo dugme, he began to compose film scores and has worked extensibly with Emir Kosturica, Iggy Pop and Cesar Evoria. I chose this version of Kalishnikov because Goran introduces it in English and has a little to say about Serbians and their guns.

Hideaway

A 1990 performance by my favorite Norwegian guitarist, Terje Rypdal. Terje became famous in the 60's playing Norwegian Ventures style twang instrumental rock in a band called The Vanguards.
He is one of the most distinctive guitar stylists in music and a great modern composer. He has been playing jazz since the 70's and has recorded almost exclusively on ECM. This piece is pure fun, he gets to rock out with a big band playing Freddie Kings classic instrumental, Hideaway.

Stop Persecuting All Them Poor TeaBaggers Now...or else

In this interview with The Guardian on Jan. 11th, Tucson, Arizona TeaParty Leader seems to be loading the onus of responsibility for the Tragic Murders and Assassination attempt on Gabrielle Giffords on ...Gabrielle Giffords.
The Arizona congresswoman shouldn't have attended an event "in full view of the public" if she had security concerns, according to Tucson Tea Party co-founder Trent Humphries.
Giffords warned MSNBC's Chuck Todd last year that there would be "consequences" to violent rhetoric and imagery after Fox News' Sarah Palin released a graphic which placed crosshairs over the congresswoman's district.
"But the thing is that the way that [Palin] has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gunsight over our district," Giffords said. "And when people do that, they’ve gotta realize there’s consequences to that action."
But Humphries thinks Giffords was just speaking out against Palin for political gain.
"It's political gamesmanship," he told the Guardian. "The real case is that she [Giffords] had no security whatsoever at this event. So if she lived under a constant fear of being targeted, if she lived under this constant fear of this rhetoric and hatred that was seething, why would she attend an event in full view of the public with no security whatsoever?"
"For all the stuff they accuse [Palin] of, that gun poster has not done a tenth of the damage to the political discourse as what we're hearing right now."
"There are people who are genuinely confused, scared, and I understand it. But there are also people who are deliberately manipulating this event and tragedy for political ends," Humpries added.
And he may be right. Another tea party group in California has been using the tragedy to raise money.
Meanwhile, back in Tucson, the 43 year old Republican District Chairman, Anthony Miller and several other staffers tendered their resignations this week following the mass shootings.

Miller, who had been a former campaign worker for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), said that verbal attacks and blog posts from members of the tea party had him fearing for the safety of his family, according to a report in The Arizona Republic.

"Today my wife of 20 yrs ask (sic) me do I think that my PCs (Precinct Committee members) will shoot at our home?" he wrote in an e-mail following the shootings. "So with this being said I am stepping down from LD20GOP Chairman...I will make a full statement on Monday."

Tea party members supporting J.D. Hayworth for senator in the midterm elections accused Miller, an African American, of being a "McCain's boy." One detractor had even made his hand into the shape of a gun and pointed it at Miller.

"I wasn't going to resign but decided to quit after what happened Saturday," Miller said. "I love the Republican Party but I don't want to take a bullet for anyone."

Perhaps this is Millers fault as well.......

HAL of course, was the (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer) an  artificial intelligence,the sentient on-board computer of the Discovery One spacecraft in Arthur C. Clarke's fictional Space Odyssey saga directed by Stanley Kubrick. HAL was ranked No. 13 on a list of greatest film villains of all time on the AFI's 100 Years... 100 Heroes and Villains.
