This is a real news item from Sports Illustrated reported yesterday, February 13.
The Kansas State High School Activities Association said that referees reported that Michelle Campbell, a 49 year old retired Albuquerque police officer, now a professional referee, was told that she could not officiate at a boys basketball game.
The game was to take place at St. Mary's Academy, a private religious school operated by the Society of St. Pius X, which follows older Roman Catholic laws. The society's world leader, the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, was excommunicated by Pope John Paul II in the late 1980's.
The reason Miss Campbell was given, according to the referees, was that as a woman, she could not be put in a position of authority over boys because of the society's beliefs.
Miss Campbell walked off the court along with the male referee who was to work with ther.
The Activities Association is considering whether to take action against the school.
