Spirit Of St. Louis Blues


A few posts back, I featured the "talking" steel guitar playing of Pete Drake who had played on so many hit records from the 50's up to the 1980's.
But here is another guitar innovator, Alvino Rey and his big band from the hay day of Swing. Alvino's chosen instrument was a very special pedal steel guitar and he could make it talk and sing. He was playing up until the 60's, when he was featured on the King Family Variety Show with his talking guitar.
Here, he even used a pretty hilarious animated "guitar" puppet to be the voice of his talking guitar.
The vocalist, the guy with the funny hat is Skeets Herfert.
