Graham, Sun Ra never left this planet because he was never on this planet...Ra is still one of the prime movers in my musical universe! I have the version of Friendly Galaxy that he recorded in St. Paul de Vence in 1970...and it is still one of my favorite things. I would love to post that version but it is not on youtube.More Ra stuff is turning up all the time, though...
I saw him in 1968 or 1969 (after all of these years, I am lucky to get this close.) He was playing at a Black Panther wedding at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit.
Later in life I saw him again with the "space is the place" ensemble in Rotterdam. Afterwards, many of the band showed up at my 5th floor apartment in Amsterdam for further space explorations.
There is some vinyl here and I still own a turntable...
Graham, I think I knew you had a Detroit Background! I never saw Sun Ra in Detroit, but I remember the posters when they played at the Grande and the music that resulted from their interaction with the MC5. I spent too many evenings at the Grande Ballroom...and lived on Canfield Street as a wayward youth.
p.s. I did see Sun Ra In Ann Arbor on multiple occasions, the last time was around the time Space Is The Place was released and it was an epic 4 hour performance in a little club named Dollar Bill's.

How many of us are left on the planet that remember Sun Ra? Yes there are many of us, but I am always shocked when I meet one.
Thanks for posting...
Graham
